Jazz with Eric in the Evening
The Monday spotlight shines on saxophonist
Wayne Shorter. A musical force for nearly half a century, Shorter played with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in the 1950s, Miles Davis's second great quintet in the 1960s, and the jazz/rock fusion band Weather Report in the 1970s. Shorter formed his current band, an all-acoustic quartet
with pianist Danilo Perez, bassist John Patitucci, and drummer Brian Blade, in 2000. Their album Alegría received the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Jazz Album.

Jazz Decades
For 35 years, Ray Smith (shown) has been the voice, heart, and soul of Jazz Decades. Ray's program features traditional jazz, big band, and swing from the
20th century and earlier, which he culls from the more than 90,000 titles in his personal collection. On this edition, Ray features
recordings by the Spike Hughes American Band circa 1933 and Miff Mole's "Moaning Low" (1929).

Jazz with Eric in the Evening
Host Eric Jackson shines the Monday night spotlight on pianist
Horace Silver (shown). Stan Getz discovered Silver in
1950, when Silver's trio played backup for him at the Sundown
Club in Hartford, Conn. Getz liked Silver's sound so much that
he took him on the road and recorded three of his compositions.
Silver moved to New York in 1951, where he began playing
regular Monday night gigs at Birdland. During that year, Silver
signed with the Blue Note label, where he remained for more
than 30 years. Although he is best known as a hard-bop
pioneer, Silver has experimented with a wide range of musical
styles, including gospel, African, and Latin American music and
soul jazz. In 2005, he received the National Academy of
Recording Arts & Sciences' President's Merit Award for his
contributions to jazz.
